PROJECT DESCRIPTION

29 is a sonorous, visual and performing arts event, where the stock market oscillations of the crash of 1929 are  mathematically transcribed into notes and interpreted by a Big Jazz Band.

15 musicians and two singers recreate Black Tuesday (nickname coined by Americans for the 29th October 1929).

A day that has historically become a part of the ‘mythology of finance’ in popular culture.

THE CONCERT

Documentation of 29 in Milan Underground Station, 2005, Performed by Big Orkestra Crams directed by Luca Garlaschelli

1st Round Stocks exchanged between 10AM and 12PM

2nd Round Stocks exchanged between 12PM and 2PM

3rd Round Stocks exchanged between 2PM to closing

FROM STOCKS TO NOTES

After having acquired the Black Tuesday data at the Wall Street Historical Archives, a software analysis decomposed all the relevant companies stock quotations in microvariables (stock value, frequency and volume of the transaction, field of reference) and recomposed them into a melodic and harmonic system attributing to every element its corresponding (heights of the note, duration, pauses, instrument of execution).

Depending on its own natural characteristics, each instrument analytically interprets the trend of a specific ‘stock exchange sector’, so to have longer notes where the exchange volumes have been massive, and shorter notes in case of small volumes or insufficient dealings, or note's pitch related to actual increase/decrease of the stock.

The improvisations of some instruments coincide instead with the ‘trade hysteria’ of entire fields, while the vocal intervention names Companies involved in major crashes.
